Vibe Mag, Racist?

In a recent interview with Billboard Mag, blue-eyed soul singer Robin Thicke claimed that he couldn't get the cover of Vibe Magazine because he is white.

"When I did a recent interview with Vibe magazine I asked, “Why can’t I get the cover? This is a magazine I love. If there’s one magazine that I’d want to be on the cover of, it’s Vibe.” Their response was they don’t have white artists on the cover; that the only white artist they’ve had on the cover was Eminem. I guess if that’s what it is, it is what it is. And I respect that because I live in a house with a black woman.
I won’t use the word “racism.” I will say it’s a tough — but rewarding — fight. I look at Mary J. Blige, somebody who has had only a few pop hits and yet has changed culture, generated new sounds and inspired leagues of artists. She’s now a worldwide phenomenon. And it’s because of what she stood for; she never gave up. She kept making great music, pouring her heart out to people.
You can’t always expect people to be as color-blind or open-minded as you want. What you can do is keep giving your heart and soul, like Bob Marley did. His music became so overwhelmingly loving; it was a relentless love in a sense. Keep beating them down with love and they can’t stop you."

Hmmm..... I think I'm gonna have to call bullsh*t on the part of Vibe Magazine. Really, what would it look like if another publication refused to give an artist the cover because they were Black or Latino? It would look like racism!

Smph!

So, Yung Berg was a no show last night at the Savannah State 2008 Yard Show. Like we here didn't see that coming. After feeling the backlash from making those negative comments about dark skinned chicks AND getting your chain snatched in the same week, I'd bee too embarrassed to show up to an HBCU [historically black college or university] too! I mean really, how does it feel to see another dude posting pics on MySpace wearing your sh*t????

Barack Obama Accepts his Party's Nomination

Although I missed the live televised speech, I did nearly kill myself to stay up and watch the rerun at one this morning. Barack delivered an excellent speech last night. It was very classic in every way. He acknowledged the Clintons, got all up in McCain's throat, and gave a very accurate account of the last eight years under the Bush administration. I especially like the part when he shouted "enough!" Just think, forty five years earlier King gave his infamous "Dream" speech. Last night was so much bigger than Obama. Last night was a vindication for all those who died to give  African Americans equal freedoms. Now we know that all of those nameless faces did not die in vain. Surprisingly, McCain had nothing but positive things to say about this historic event.

Breaking News: McCain has Chosen a Running Mate

According to NBC and MSNBC, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, campaign officials told NBC News on Friday. She would be the first woman to serve on a Republican presidential ticket. The anti-abortion Palin would also be the first Alaskan ever to appear on a national ticket. Palin, 44, was elected Alaska's first woman governor in 2006. The state’s voters had grown weary of career politician Gov. Frank Murkowski, whom she defeated in the GOP primary. What does this say about McCain? Only that he is a snake after all! He criticized Obama for his lack of experience in foreign policy, Palin has none; criticized Obama for his overall youth, Palin is younger than Obama. I have to ask myself, what does a govoner know about Washington at all? Its all clear now. I really dont think McCain cares who his running mate is. They're just a pawn in his strategy to win the election. And from the looks of thing, he only picked a woman as his running mate to capitalize on the fact that Hilary was "overlooked" by Obama. Smph!

Finally Common give us something to dance lean to. This is of of his forth coming album entitled Invincible Summer [???] due out September 22, 2008. Billboard has described the album as "electro-tinged" and "techno-inspired."

Diddy Flies Coach?????!

Hilary Finally got some "Actright"

Well, I must say, Hilary really gave a solid speech last night. I think she did a phenomenal job of bringing her supporters over to the Obama ticket. She represented herself well, she made Obama look good, and she was the first to openly attack McCain. "No way, no how, no McCain. Were you in this campaign just for me...." President Clinton and Joe Biden speak tonight, and the man of the year, Barack Obama, speaks tomorrow.

Another Day, Another Smear Ad from McCain

Kanye West "Good Morning"

Finally, finally, finally! I've been waiting for this since last year when I heard that Japanese artist Takashi Murakami would be doing the treatment. Just in case you're wondering, this is the sixth video off of Kanye's Graduation [not including the extra 2 for Flashing Lights], and 'Ye is reportedly working on a dvd that is to be released later this year.

Daddy Yankee Can Get It In The Ear!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you effin serious?!!!!!!! A fighter for the hispanic community????? I'm dumbfounded. Mr. Yankee is on some serious BULL right now. I wonder how much he got paid? John McCain never ceases to amaze me. He did so much to criticize Obama for being affiliated with celebrities, and now this!

Solange Dresses......

....Hmmm Solange may or may not be a fashion victim, but her album is seriously that new new, old school, spaceship riding stuff that music needs right now. Her sophomore album entitled Sol Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams dropped today, and I must say, it is a solid body of work. Solange definitely displayed a sufficient amount of growth vocally and lyrically since her debut album in 2003. Favorite tracks include God Given Name, I Decided [pt. 1], Valentines Day, This bird, Cosmic Journey, and ChampagneChroniKnightCap. This album is definitely expected to do great things. It has also been predicted that Solange will develop a cult following. Good job, good job.

I'm Kinda Mad at This!

Ok, so get this, at a routine checkpoint Denver police found riffles, ammunition, and drugs in a man's vehicle. They arrested the man, and that arrest led to two others. One of the men claimed that they wanted too kill senator Obama. Federal authorities suspect these men to be white supremacists, but they insist that these men pose no threat to Obama. ARE THEY F**KING SERIOUS!!!!!!!!! They found a weapon and got a confession, but "We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said in a statement. SMPH! I'm so mad, I can't think straight.....
But, anywho, Michelle Obama gave an excellent speech last night. She did a lot to "soften" her image. Here it is in it's entirety.

Boooo [hoe sit down]!

Booooo! Hillary got a lot of votes, so what! That doesn't make her the right fit on Barack's ticket. You didn't have to be Ms. Cleo to foresee that. And speaking of Hillary, she better be on that "act right" for the democratic conventions!

Usher "Traffic"

[Sigh] I think I'm gonna start writing a eulogy for this guys career.....

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please pass the mic!

LMAO! LMAO!!!!!!!! I hate posting trash, but you have to admit that this is funny as hell! I cant believe they just left JoJo on the floor like that. and then the freaking stagehand picked up the mic and kept walking as K-Cei continues to sing lol! Please pass the mic!

Zhang Yimou

First, let me say, BOW IN THE MUTHASUCKIN PRESENCE OF GREATNESS!!!!! Zhang Yimou; this is the visionary behind the extraordinary opening and closing ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics. I'm sure by now you all have seen it on NBC and youtube. It was by far the greatest festival the Olypics have ever seen; never to be match again [unless he directs another].
For those who think that they are unfamiliar with his work, Yimou is the guy that directed Hero starring Jet Le. Yimou was born in Xi’an in 1951 to parents of "bad" class background and reportedly sold his own blood to buy his first camera. He grew up in socialist China where class struggle dominated life and literature. Like many young Chinese of the time, he was sent to farms and factories during the Cultural Revolution and so gained grass-roots knowledge of life in China. His portfolio of photographs helped win him admission to the cinematography department of the Beijing Film Academy in 1978, after successfully appealing a decision to bar him on the basis of age.
His directorial debut, Red Sorghum (1987), captured a domestic mass audience and it catapulted him to local and international fame. Its success brought international funding for his next two films, Judou (1990) and Raise the Red Lantern (1991). These three films form a trilogy that cemented his reputation abroad but both Judou and Raise the Red Lantern were banned in China until he made a Communist Party-approved film on a contemporary theme, The Story of Qiu Ju (1992). Many see this shift from mythic to mass filmmaking as Zhang’s capitulation to Party authorities and some trace a decline in his subsequent work. However, Zhang himself sees it differently. He constantly seeks diversity. He believed that his first three films were too similar: "I went from red to red. I don’t want audiences to say, ‘Ah, yes, another Zhang Yimou!’ whenever I make a film". His filmmaking therefore moved from historical to mostly contemporary themes in the second decade of his career. On the cusp of his third decade, he has again changed style with Hero, a historical gongfu film that marries the mythic with the most popular of all Chinese genres ¾ martial arts.

George Obama

The comments on Youtube seem to be flowing in around the clock as this CNN interview with George Obama, Barack's half brother, has surfaced. People are saying that Barack should be ashamed of himself for letting his brother live in such conditions. Well, I think those people should shut the hell up! In this video and in Baracks autobiography, George clearly wants to make a life for himself. So what; one of the neighbors thinks Barack should improve their way of living. She is no relative of the family; she is virtually the same as anyone who put their two cents in at Youtube. This video kinda grinds my gears [just a little]. Why isn't anyone going to great lengths to dig into John and Cindy McCain's lives? Cindy has a half sister that she doesn't even accnowledge. Cindy's father was unfaithful and divorced his first wife to married her mother leaving her half sister, Kathleen Portalski, to be raised in a single family home. But yet Cindy has been quoted sevral times on CNN and in the New York Times as being an only child. How about them apples?! I don't see what all this fuss is about. Barack clearly spilled the beans on his family long before he even thought about being president.

Cassie, Cassie, Cassie!!! I might have a thing for you lol! Diddy must have had her on that summer get right Bad Boy fitness plan! I'll probably never say that she is a phenomenal singer, but damn.......she is hot as hell, and she just took a dump on all you other chicks with those damn mummy shoes. Kudos to the stylist; the shoe game is officially over!

Obama & Biden

Well folks, its official, Obama has asked Joe Biden to be his running mate [sorry Hillary....syke]. Above is the image that appears on Obama's website. The news was leaked around midnight, and CNN was the first to diseminate it. There was some criticism, of Obama, on how the news was leaked. Previously the Obama camp asked supporters to sign up to recieve a text message that would allow them to be the first to know Obama's VP pick. I did get a text, but it was a little late [about 4 hours late] when it came around 4:30am EST. A similar message was released on Facebook around the same time. Probably what happened was that everyone didnt get the text at the same time; some got it early and the news was then leaked to the press. Although some say that Biden is a good choice due to his expertise in foreign affairs, I'm still scratching my head on it. Biden, the 65 year old senator from Delaware, has been known to run off at the mouth a few times. Of course the McCain camp has shown lightning speed by putting out an ad already.

Hmmm...... The ad might be making a point. It looks like I just have to trust Obama's judgement on his decision. Team Obama is poised to make an official announcement today at 3pm. Coverage will be live at BarackObama.com. The following is a smart ad [15 cool points] that Obama placed on YouTube.com late last night.

Not so Hot Lesbian Action.....

Rapper Da Brat was sentenced to three years behind bars, seven years of probation and 200 hours of community service Friday morning (August 22) for striking a woman in the face with a rum bottle. The October 2007 incident at an Atlanta-area nightclub left the victim’s face permanently scarred. According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Gail Flake handed down the punishment, while about six members of the rapper’s family quietly wept inside the courtroom. Da Brat (born Shawntae Harris) told her relatives “I love y’all” as she was led out of the courtroom by sheriff’s deputies. “We love you too,” they replied. Well, at least she'll have someone to hold through the night....

Mario "Dont Do It"

Boy, boy, boy, this kid can sing, that's why I'm perpetually perplexed by the fact that his albums don't sell!

New Music by Usher

I dont know whats been up with this dude lately, but Usher has been on some serious bull! the album sucks, all these internet tracks that have been leaking over the past few months suck; Usher sucks! You would think that after all the drama he's been through in the past year he would have channeled that energy into his music.

The Cool Kids "Delivery Man"

Terrence Howard "Sanctuary"

Ok, ok, ok...... Am I getting punked????! It sure feels sounds like it. I heard that Terrence was getting into the record biz, but this ish is too terrible! What is with all these people who want to branch out into different areas of entertainment? Soon enough we're gonna end up with a musical saturation of actors who cant sing and a tv full of singer who cant act [hmmm wait a minute.....]. But anyway, Howard is working on his first album, having already recorded a track with Chris Brown. Howard has described the album, containing Spanish guitar and R&B and scheduled for a September 2008 release, as "urban country". Smph! What the hell is "urban country"???! I predict a catastrophic flop in the near future.....

Gnarls Barkley enlightens and entertains TV audiences on Thursday, August 21, when the Sundance Channel broadcasts "Gnarls Live from Abbey Road" at 10pm ET/9pm CT (check local listings) in the US. For those in the UK, More4 will run the program on August 22 at 11:55pm. Gnarls performs intimate, stripped down versions of songs from The Odd Couple, in a session recorded live at the Beatles' legendary Abbey Road studios.

New Kids on the Block ft Ne-Yo "Single"

Well, as I have previously posted, the Kids are at it again, and this time they seem serious. Not serious as in seriously good, but serious as in seriously trying to make a comeback. This time they got Ne-Yo and Polo da Don on this "Single". Eh-hmm, excuse me for being a hater, but this sh*t is wack! NKOTB please sit down! But, just incase you blog junkies care, the new album entitled "The Block" [smph] drops September 2nd.

Keep the Faith.....

Maybe I'm just late, but did anyone know that Faith Evans is releasing a tell all book next week????? Hmmmm, I guess I am late. Evans is set to release a “tell all” book, titled "Keep the Faith: A Memoir", on August 29, 2008. It is said to detail the highs and lows of the singer’s life, but will also shed light on Evans’ controversial relationship with her late husband, the Notorious B.I.G. "I want people to understand that although he was a large part of my life, my story doesn’t actually begin or end with Big’s death. My journey has been complicated on many levels. And since I am always linked to Big, there are a lot of misconceptions about who I really am. It’s not easy putting your life out there for the masses. But I’ve decided I’ll tell my own story. For Big. For my children. And for myself." This memoir also gives insight on another famous dead rapper [from the west coast] and how he tried to "force" himself on good 'ol Faith. We'll just have to sit back and watch how this one goes over.....

Bastard Graphics by Julien Rivoire

Format: Where did you grow up and how was the artistic environment there?
Julien Rivoire: I grew up in Lyon, France. My parents had some art books and beautiful books about nature, people, and architecture. My artistic environment became stronger when I was a teenager—magazines, skateboard designs, sleeve design etc. I was suddenly more sensitive to graphic stuffs, art, music, and all those creative fields.

Format: Were you raised in a strict household? Did your family members ever discourage you from doing art?
Julien Rivoire: My parents gave me freedom to do art studies. My father went to the Fine Arts School in Lyon in the late ‘60s; he’s a very good painter and drawer. So we used to visit nice places when I was a child, like museums, churches, and castles. I found it boring when I was a kid, but now I would like to do it again.

Format: Do you feel like Lyon gets as much recognition as Paris? How is it different?
Julien Rivoire: The city is a lot smaller, but it’s the second biggest city in France. We have less events here than in Paris, but it began to change two or three years ago. The cool thing is that many creative people–music, graphic design, illustration, photographs–are connected here due to the size of the city. We used to meet in the same places, at the same parties, in the same bars. I’ve met some great people thanks to that. We have a lot to do in Lyon contrary to Paris.

Format: When did you first begin to take an interest in graphics?
Julien Rivoire: By doing some graphics for my friends: stickers, sleeve designs for our burned CDs, and t-shirt designs. It wasn’t very nice but I liked that. The idea of working as a freelancer or in my own studio was a dream to me too.

Format: How were you discovered, or how did people begin to notice your art?
Julien Rivoire: A really important time was with my first website. I had some reviews on websites or forums. I realized that people could like my artwork.

Format: Do you draw or sketch everyday?
Julien Rivoire: Never. Sometimes—when I need a sketch before working on my design directly on the computer. I’m not patient and I’m a very bad drawer. By the way, I will try to find my “style” someday.

Format: What is your ideal setting to be free and come up with new ideas?
Julien Rivoire: It depends. I’m better when I’m faced with a true challenge or something new for me to do. I don’t really like doing stuff I’ve [done before].

Format: Did you go to school and study graphic design?
Julien Rivoire: Not that much. I did some, but I mainly did technical studies of software [such as] Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc. I like to learn things alone by trying. I just did that: staying late in front of my screen working on new designs, new software, or reading a lot of books. I liked that.

Format: What are all of the different types of art that you do, and how did you get into them?
Julien Rivoire: I actually do graphic design. That’s what I love the most. I also do some animation/videos with mates from PLAY COLLECTIVE. I sometimes take pictures too, but I’m not a real photographer.

Format: What places in and outside of the country has your art taken you to?
Julien Rivoire: Not so far. Germany and Tunisia to do some live videos with PLAY. I want to go to New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Japan, Sweden, or Australia. Wherever I can go!

Format: What is the PLAY COLLECTIVE about and how did it come about?
Julien Rivoire: A video collective with my friends. We do live motion during festivals, gigs, or events. It’s really pleasing, actually.

Format: Do you work with a team, or do you design alone for the most part?
Julien Rivoire: Alone for the most part. I like to work like that. I’m more productive in that way, but I actually work with some friends, like Ease (from PLAY too). We have the same influences and tastes concerning graphic design.

Format: Do you often take part in exhibits? If so, what do you try to achieve by allowing people to view your art?
Julien Rivoire: I try to impress myself first, or just be happy with what I’ve done. I also like to make people smile and appreciate my artwork. And yeah, I’ve done some exhibitions and I’m planning to make more.

Format: Where did the name Bastard Graphics come from? Did it come from the idea of having no guidance or rules when it comes to your creative abilities?
Julien Rivoire: It’s exactly that. At first it came from the Bastard Pop movement, also called Mash Up or Bootlegs. The most famous artists were 2 Many Dj’s or Lionel Vinyl. I liked the idea of having not that many rules, mixing different styles. I used to work like that—from retro to techno.

Format: Graphic art can be very tedious; how long do you spend on a general project?
Julien Rivoire: Two hours to two weeks. It really depends.

Format: You’ve created graphics for websites, skateboards, t-shirts, and more. What or who would you consider a dream to create for?
Julien Rivoire: I would really appreciate doing sleeve design for bands. Some like New Order, Underworld, or The Streets just to name a few. I would be very proud of that.

Format: Who are your influences?
Julien Rivoire: Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, Tom Hingston, Geoff McFetridge, Universal Everything, Underworld, Apparat, Kraftwerk, Junior Boys, Unkle…

Format: You created portraits of Dizzee Rascal and Mix Master Mike. Does hip-hop also have an influence on you? What artists do you listen to?
Julien Rivoire: Deltron 3030, Roots Manuva, Antipop Consortium, The Streets, Nas, Dizzee Rascal, and Wiley. They have some kind of influence, but I’m more into electronic or techno music.

Format: If Bastard Graphics had a theme song what would it be?
Julien Rivoire: “Be There” by Unkle, or “Born Slippy” by Underworld. I love those songs.

Format: Do you have a signature style? Is there any way that people can tell that the piece is by Bastard Graphics right away?
Julien Rivoire: I put my logo on some of my artwork by I try to not to. I’m always impressed when people recognize my style. They must have seen my name somewhere [laughs].

Format: As the internet has become popular so has graphic design; do you find that your popularity has increased with the rise of the web?
Julien Rivoire: Yes, truly at the beginning of my activity. Today it’s my most important way to communicate with clients or collaborators. Websites like Myspace let me find new people to work with too.

Format: What other side projects are you participating in?
Julien Rivoire: Quadricolor, an exhibition with Superkero; Ré and Beekei, all friends of mine; and PLAY.

Format: What do you do when you’re not designing?
Julien Rivoire: I’m always listening to music. I like to read, go to parties, drink beer at barbecues, and see my friends.

Format: Is there anything special that you would like to add about yourself or your art?
Julien Rivoire: Come to see my new website; new version—it’s better like that.

Iron Man, Please Sit Down!

Well, apparently Mr. Downey Jr. isnt much of a fan of The Dark Knight. His latest film, Tropic Thunder, recently knocked Batman from number one at the box office this weekend. The following is what he had to say about Batman in a recent interview with Movie Hole:

"My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight. I'm like, 'That's not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.' I loved 'The Prestige' but didn't understand 'The Dark Knight'. Didn't get it, still can't tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character…I'm like, 'I get it. This is so high-brow and so f---ing smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie,'” the actor ranted before adding, “You know what? F--- DC comics. That's all I have to say and that's where I'm really coming from.”

How dumb! Mr. Iron Man just might have "went full retard" for that comment. Since when did anyone ever feel like they needed a college education to understand a Batman movie? I don't even know why anyone would pay to see Iron Man in blackface.
