I Am Not An Atheist
Posted by maLik ΙΦΘ at 4:24 PMI am not an atheist! I don't know why I find myself repeating these words so many times. Maybe its just because whenever I get into a debate with anyone about religion, their ears are so backed up with the tired bullshit that they've been taught as a child that they can not hear me clearly.
I am not an atheist! I do have a belief in God, just not in any particular religious sense. That's right ladies and gents, I do not have a religion. I would take the time to discuss why each major religion does not make any logical sense to me, but that would take forever. But, due to my geographical region, I will choose to explain [not that I have to] why I am no longer a Christian.
Yes, I said no "no longer a Christian" due to the fact that I was raised in the Christian church. To make my argument easier to follow I will format it as a list [in no particular order].
1. I am not a Christian because I don't believe in Jesus. Gasp, I said it! I really don't care to discuss weather or not he actually existed, seeing as how he is only mentioned in the bible and not any other historical literature, but the whole Jesus story dose not make sense. There are too many holes in it. First, God created everything, correct? Including me. If God created me, then inversely I am a child of God, correct? God also created everyone who lived before Jesus was born, correct? So that makes everyone who was born before Jesus a child of God. So, what I'm getting at is, that everyone is born a child of God. Weather or not they choose to live up to this title it is what they are because God created them. I think most Christians would agree with me on that. So, if we are all born children of God, how was Jesus the "only begotten son"? Second, why worship an external source when you already have the original within you. I believe that everyone is born with a piece of God in them. Some people like to refer to it as their soul. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." I believe this is one of the most misunderstood verses in the bible. The man was talking about the infinite "I" and the infinite "me". Basically he was saying you are the way the truth and the life, and the only way for you to get to God is through yourself. You should really take time to research the relationship between Jesus' teachings and quantum physics. if you have an inkling of a brain you should be amazed.
2. I don't have all the answers, and I don't act like I do, but somethings really perplex me. Even as an eight year old I was asking questions like "If God knows that we are going to do something wrong, then why does he get mad when we do it?" And this whole predetermination thing boggles me. If God already knows everything before it happens, then doesn't he already know weather or not I'm going to "heaven" or "hell"? This subject is usually a central focus in the various Christian denominations. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that only 144,000 people are going to heaven. I don't know where they get this info from, but I'm pretty sure that they have scripture to back it up.
3. The Bible [along with other religious texts] are full of fluff. It contradicts itself so many times that it makes not sense. For example:
God is jealous: "For the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." (Exod. 34:14)
Jealousy is a sin: "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious ... jealousy" (Gal. 5:19-20)
Nobody has seen God: "No one has ever seen God ..." (John 1:18)
Abram saw God: "When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless." (Gen. 17:1)
Jacob saw God: "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared." (Gen. 32:30)
The leaders of Israel saw God: "But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank." (Exod. 24:11)
Keep in mind that these are just a FEW contradictions. Also the bible is full of verses that just are plain ridiculous.
"But women will be saved through childbearing." (1 Tim. 2:15)
"If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off." (1 Cor. 11:6)
"Cover up your excrement so that God will not turn away from you." (Deut. 12-14)
And my personal favorite: "You must keep my statutes. You must not allow two different kinds of your animals to breed, you must not sow your field with two different kinds of seed, and you must not wear a garment made of two different kinds of fabric." (Leviticus 19:19)
I guess whoever "invented" the mule is burning in hell; the farmer who grows more than one crop is doomed; and I'm pretty sure you [the reader] are wearing some type of cotton / polyester blend! Again, I would ask you to keep in mind that these are only a FEW verses. I already know that someone is going to tell me that I cant pick and choose verses out of the bible, and I will tell them that neither can they, so in an effort to be a better Christian they should burn all their cotton / polyester blends.
4. And speaking of being a better Christian....... I am so sick of people telling me that what I believe is wrong; that I need to go to church; the bible says this, the bible says that. Seeing as how most of these people who tell me this are my friends, I going to attempt to be nice with this next point. PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH! Don't tell me I need to be in church if you don't go. Don't tell me to read the bible, because I have; the entire book several times. And though I don't read it for religious purposes [I read just so I can argue lol] I probably know it better than you. I have no problems with Christians. I fully understand the fact that everyone has their own beliefs, and a right to them. I'm just sick of having the same discussions over again. The bible says, "In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven." (Mat 5:16). I really hate to burst someones bubble, but I do not see this "light" in too many people. People enjoy getting drunk, just like me. People enjoy premarital sex, justmore than me. People don't go to church, just like me; and People don't love their neighbors the way that they should, just like me [I'm trying to change the latter]. And according to these people I'm the "atheist". Please note that my use of the word "people" is really a substitute for most of those who have been "telling me about myself".
And so, these are just a few arguments that I have against Christianity. Do note that while I have read just about every major religious text [i.e. the bible, the Koran, the Dahrma, etc.] I only chose to focus on Christianity due to comments made by my circle of friends. I do not have anything against any religious preference [I would like to challenge any devout Black Christian, as this religion was beat into our ancestors and is more than likely the result of you believing what you believe;*** how about them apples!]. I do, however, have a problem with people who just go along with how they were raised with out asking questions. I'm baffled by the fact that many people would blindly follow any religion without asking question, but such is faith. I applaud anyone who has done some serious soul searching and research and has arrived at a particular faith. I'm not that guy that just randomly goes around trying to share what I believe. Which is probably why people confuse my arguments against religion as proof that I am an atheist. I'm done for now. Forward all your hate mail below as a comment. I'm sure it will provide me with enough material for a pt.2.
