Artist Spotlight: The Cool Kids

Part of the mid-2000s hip-hop movement found kids in all-over prints rapping about their shoes and their favorite forms of transportation (which often weren't cars), the Cool Kids proved to be both an Internet and live show phenomenon. The duo of Antoine "Mickey Rocks" Reed (left) and Evan "Chuck Inglish" Ingersoll (right) met in mid-2005 after Mickey came across some of Chuck's beats online and liked what he heard. They met up in their Chicago-area homes (where Mickey was born and raised; Chuck lived in Mount Clemens, MI, about 30 miles north of Detroit, until he was 11) with the intention of making beats to sell to other artists, but soon realized their own measured, smooth flows and lyrics fit best over their production. In 2007, though they had yet to release any material outside of what was posted on their MySpace site or MP3 blogs, the group started receiving a lot of press attention from fellow-Chicagoans and tastemakers Pitchfork, who invited them to play at their summer festival. This led to a spot at New York's CMJ Music Marathon, where they shared a showcase with DJ A-Trak -- who offered to put out their EP -- and an opening spot on M.I.A.'s solo tour. These guys are a refreshing addition to the hip-hop game right now. Their honest approach to the culture is very reminiscent of groups like Kid & Play, The Fat Boys, and Dj Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. For more information, check their MySpace page.

Marc Jacobs Meets Andy Warhol

Recently Marc Jacobs was featured on the cover of June/July issue of Interview Magazine. On the cover he was given the looks of Andy Warhol, as the magazine describes him as the Warhol of our times. Now the Marc By Marc Jacobs line released t-shirts and tote bags that features the cover art of the magazine. “Warhol is Warhol. He’s practically a god. I thought, ‘I’m going to get a lot of hell for this,” the designer says of his Interview photoshoot. Proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts ($35) and tote bags ($15) will benefit the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. They are now available in Marc Jacobs stores.

Currently Reading...

The Pact. I was first introduced to this book exactly four years ago. I attended a summer program at Clark Atlanta University that was geared to producing more doctors in the black community [I never wanted to be a doctor, the program payed $500 lol]. Part of the program required participants to read this book. Never had I ever been motivated to do so well in school.
This book is about three inner city youths coming up on the hard streets of Newark, NJ. During their junior year in high school they all made an agreement to enter a college program that provided a comprehensive path for inner city high school graduates to continue their education and one day become doctors. Throughout the book, the authors, Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt, chronicled their major ups and downs on their path to graduating med school. Not only are they all friends to this day, they are all doctors.
This is a story about the power of friendship. Of joining forces and beating the odds. A story about changing your life, and the lives of those you love the most. To me this book is a must read for anyone who is on the course of pursuing any type of goal. This is a book that I am currently rereading to help keep me motivated to complete my educational goals. I hope you pick up a copy and do the same. For more information visit ThreeDoctors.com.

Hate to do it Again....

.....but I had to post another Madonna flashback video. Don't grill me for this. Sometimes music isn't all about a hype beat or a person who can actually sing. Sometimes its about artists who have something to say. And for this reason, Madonna has gained my respect.

You Only Live Once

I have come to the conclusion that relationships are not for me. In actuality, I really don't see the point of them at all. And dont get me started with this monogamy thing.....
ps; Does anybody else find it interesting that Pharrell is a photographer for Playboy™?
